I don’t mean people are afraid to use color. They are afraid they will make the wrong color choices. It saddens me that many people are so worried about making a mistake that they often settle for oh-so-boring beige or off-white.

There is a lot to be said for neutral colors. A neutral color scheme can be soothing and relaxing. It can be very elegant. If you have a predominantly neutral scheme, you can pull colorful accents in and out of the space. You can change the look of any neutral space by doing something as simple as changing the accent pillows in the Living Room or Bedroom. Neutral does not necessarily mean boring.

If you have a great fear of mixing colors, take a look at God’s gardens. It seems the more color, the more beautiful the garden. Oh, and apparently blue and green go with everything.

Some color combinations just seem to go better together. As we decorate, we create color schemes based on the color wheel. Selecting colors side by side, or opposite, and so on, creates different color schemes with different effects.

Pulling a color scheme from a decorative item is an easy way to decorate a room. The artist or designer of the item has created the color scheme for you.

A A favorite work of art is a fantastic way to introduce color into a space. I believe that most artists have a God-gifted talent with color. Pull out a single color for a small or large accent or pull out several colors to design your space.

When doing a bedroom, absolutely nothing should be done to the room until you find the perfect bed coverings. I have seen too many people have to repaint because they found a comforter they fell in love with and it did not match the colors they thought they wanted. Many companies offer coordinating items and again, your work is almost done for you.

4. Draperies, Window Coverings, and Shower Curtains
I separate draperies from window coverings because this could include draperies around your bed or wall. I know,shower curtains sound funny. However, I have had clients who found a gorgeous,shower curtains. When it was for the family bathroom, it was a simple matter to find colors for that room. When it was for the Master Bathroom, it meant coordinating bath and bedroom together.

While accent pillows are probably too small to use for creating a workable color scheme, you might come across one you absolutely fall in love with. However, extra large pillows 18”-24” in size often come in beautifully colored designs and present a larger image from which to create your beautiful color scheme.

I have seen lovely color schemes pulled from pretty dishtowels, a set of dishes, or a colorful set of canisters.
