Color, pattern and textures make a room. The types and combinations of these elements define a space. Fabrics are the softening, welcoming element in the overall design of a space. Using different fabrics, with different patterns, can be very important to the process of making an interesting space. Sadly, people fear mixing patterns almost as much as they fear using colors in their interiors.

Solid...
You may not think of a solid as a "pattern." However, it is a very important part of mixing fabrics and surfaces. A solid color is usually the largest saturation in the process. In a color scheme, it will probably be on the wall. In pattern selection, it could be the sofa, the carpet, or the bed covering. Accent pillows are an excellent tool to add texture and color to a space. A neutral room, such as apartment with a bland color scheme, can be drastically changed with the addition of accent pillows. Shiny, polished cotton in a hot pink color is a very different look from hot pink chenille. Here is your opportunity to add a punch of color in your interiors.

Large Print...
Your large print may contain two or more colors. Usually, it is a good source for developing your color scheme. Your large print might be on the sofa, the bed, or a rug. It may be used on pillows or cushions. Contrary to what many believe, your large print does not have to be flowers.
|
Small Print...
A small print should complement the colors and theme in your large print. If your large print were a tropical theme, you would not choose a country calico even if the colors were an exact match. It is possible to add a second small print if it is the same pattern used in different coordinating colors or if it is a different print in the same colors.

Stripe or Chevron...
A stripe may consist of two neutral, contrasting or complimentary colors. It may also be multiple colors in various widths. A large stripe and a small stripe in coordinating colors may be used in the same space.
|
Checks and Plaid...
Like Stripes, plaids may be large or small. Large and small may be used in the same space if the colors coordinate. People tend to think of plaid as "masculine" or "country" style. However, plaids come in beautiful colors and offer opportunity to design interest and beauty into your space.
