During the past few years, I did not give up on the idea of having a self-sustaining mini-farm. My goal: to have as much information as possible to begin preparing my little farm for new activity. My barn needs a little updating and I am rethinking my poultry house. These were here when I bought Wisteria Cottage and did not function with the efficiency that I thought they should.
I visited the UGA Extension Service. I thought I would run in and grab publications, but no. If you want print copies now, they go on line and print them off for you. They graciously took down my long list and printed what they could find.
I picked up several books that were being held at my local library. I have ordered many books through the Georgia Library Pines System. This has enabled me to study and learn from authors whom I cannot collect at this time. My small-town library has a good collection of books. I am delighted to say that after seeing my inter-library loan books, they often decide to order their own copies.
My first book ordered through the system was “The Have More Plan” by Ed Robinson. (This was when my daughter was in the 2nd grade. Her oldest son is now 17. J) I made copies of the important pages, including the plans for a small barn. I still have these copies today. I found “Starting Right with Milk Goats” many years ago at a yard sale. It was invaluable when I purchased my first goats. I found it still important when I purchased my first Dairy Goat the first year I moved to Wisteria Cottage. Through the years, I have looked for other books in the have-more plan. Storey has re-published ‘The Have More Plan.” I truly hate the “over-sized magazine” format. I would love to see it in a book.
I have to do more than a few repairs before I can begin searching for animals. A friend has promised to set me up with a hive from his Russian Bees. I have never dealt with bees before and I have to be prepared for them.
My chicken run is completely demolished. I had thought I would be ready to order chicks in the Spring, but not without major renovations. I am also looking for plans for a nice, easy to clean, and predator resistant rabbit hutch. If anyone knows where I can find the tool for humane killing of Rabbits, please let me know. I saw one on-line a while back and forgot to write it down.
After living at Wisteria Cottage for ten years I know a little bit more about my little farm than when I made my original plans. For instance, I know where the summer rises and sets in the various seasons. It is for this reason that I have decided to start from scratch and map out a new, sustainable plan. I will share this with you as soon as possible.
May your day be blessed,
KMJ
