My new daughter-in-law loves Marilyn Monroe. I promised her a custom doll. However, neck surgery in November meant that I was unable to complete the doll in time for her Christmas present. I really wanted to give her something she would love.
While web surfing images of Marilyn, we came across a black and white drawing that had great possibilities. I made a large sketch of the drawing and taped it to a piece of wood. I taped a blank sheet of paper over the drawing. Then, each grandchild drew over the lines, creating their version of the features. We decided to add color to the lips and fingernails to make it pop.

I spray-painted a piece of wood. I chose Krylon hammered black. I took the drawing of Marilyn and tore rough pieces from the edges until it fit. Then, we decoupaged it to the wood. First, I put a coat of Gesso on the wood. I placed the image on the wood and then covered it with more gesso. In places, the black came though the paper and I encouraged this by brushing with a heavier hand.
The grandchildren were very excited about their creation. Yes, my daughter-in-law loved it. I am thinking about making a matching one for her. I think it turned out well. What do you think?
