My son, Jim, came home very excited because the new Tractor Supply had baby ducks for $5 each. His brothers gave him $10 and he purchased two, a mallard and a fluffy yellow duck that I assume would have been white.
He called me a few days later, while I was out shopping, to tell me that both ducks had died. I felt really bad for him, but the store was out of ducks and I could not buy him anymore at that time. When we arrived home, the ducks were soaking wet in the cage. Although he vehemently denied it, I have a sneaking suspicion that he tried to give his ducks a swim in the bathtub.

After a long discussion with him, I purchased 2 more ducks for him and he is enjoying them. They are growing at an amazing rate.
I thought about the number of Easter ducks, chicks and rabbits that are sold at this time of the year. Most of them are loved to death. They are handled too much, squeezed too tightly or given swimming lessons before they are ready. Others die because children lose interest in them and forget to care for them properly. I think very few actually make it to adulthood.
I remember when I was a child. We all got baby ducks. My brother tried to sit on his baby duck and ride it. He cried and I felt sorry for him, but I wasn’t about to give him mine. I do remember that out of 5, none survived.
If you are going to purchase baby chicks or ducks for the first time, here are a few things you should know.
- They eat a lot.
- They poop a lot.
- They drink a lot.
- They poop a lot.
- They chirp a lot.
- Did I mention that they poop a lot?
You should be prepared for your babies before you bring them home. It is unrealistic running around afterwards trying to find a cage when their box is 2 inches deep in poop, feed, and spilled water.
