I am very lucky to have my little home. Wisteria Cottage came with a small house, and 3 buildings to use as storage, barns, etc. This is not always true for people who decide to lead sustainable lives.
For many years, I dreamed of a farm. I poured over books on homesteading, gardening and animal husbandry. I had years of knowledge from my grandpa and my uncle. In many ways, I think these two men held more information than all the books I have read. They did instill the desire within me to live a country life.
I knew exactly what kind of home I wanted. Cob. Cob homes have been around for centuries and the thatch roofed, cob homes of England have charmed me with their romantic appeal. I was totally enthralled when I discovered the movement to self-build cob homes around the world.
The beauty of the small cob homes was in the personal style and character conveyed by the builders. The possibility for artistic expression is unlimited. I was hooked. I researched Cob houses on the web and discovered Cord-wood houses, and earth ships. I designed the floor plan of the home I wanted.
In 2006, we found the perfect land to build our cob, cord-wood, earth ship. It was next door to the land my sister had just purchased. We were all excited about the prospect of beginning our new life. Yet, it was not meant to be. In October of that year we found Wisteria Cottage and fell in love.
I have not given up on Cob. I plan to build a Cob bread and pizza oven in my yard. I have also considered covering my studio with cob and cordwood. I am an artist and a romantic and cob attracts me in both. After all, who wouldn’t enjoy living in a HobbitHouse?
